In 1 Corinthians 1:30, Paul wrote that Jesus became four things to us: wisdom from God, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption. Through Jesus, these things are seen clearly or made real. The idea is very similar to what John wrote in John 1:17, “…grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ.” Grace and truth had existed before, as had righteousness, sanctification, and redemption, but in Christ all these are made real. In the same way, the wisdom of God had always existed as part of God, but Jesus made it real. He bore out that wisdom through His teaching and obedience, and God accepted and rewarded Him for it.
John 1:18 says that Jesus showed us the Father more clearly than any other had or could. In His teaching, He became wisdom from God by revealing with authority the truth about life and how God will judge on the last day (Matt. 18:35; Matt. 24:42ff). Jesus spoke the message from the Father because He knew this life is about preparing to meet God (John 12:48-50). His focus on forming eternal relationships over keeping physical friends is one way His teaching showed us wisdom from God (Luke 16:9).
Jesus did more than teach, however. He honored His Father with obedience in all things (John 8:49). He overcame every temptation by choosing obedience to God (Hebrews 4:15). As He lived His human life, He humbled Himself and obeyed even though it brought about an early and terrible death for Himself (Phil. 2:8).
In all His life, Jesus became wisdom from God. He spoke God’s message, obeyed it, and was rewarded when He met the Father face to face (Phil. 2:9). And He did that for our sakes so that we would adopt that wisdom for ourselves by living as He lived so that we may be rewarded as He was.
