The Way of the Future, or the Sins of the Past?

Back in 2017, WIRED interviewed Anthony Levandowski who was promoting his new religion called “The Way of the Future.” All who were willing could help shape and craft a single artificial intelligence that they would worship and obey as a god. Levandowski said that people should think of themselves as animals compared to the AI god, and in much the same way that we treat animals, so would the AI treat us. He asked, “Do you want to be a pet or livestock? We give pets medical attention, food, grooming, and entertainment. But an animal that’s biting you, attacking you, barking, and being annoying? I don’t want to go there.” The implication is that all who resist his AI god would be put down like a rabid dog. He said, “We’re in the process of raising a god…it’s a tremendous opportunity.”

By 2021, “The Way of the Future” had closed down as a movement. However, it has been replaced by other religious efforts like “The Church of AI,” which not only aims to worship an AI god but also has an AI-written religious tome called “Transmorphosis.” It seems people are not opposed to the idea of being ruled by a god as long as it is made in their own image.

Christians have no reason to be stunned at this development. Ecclesiastes 1:9 says, “There is nothing new under the sun.” While the technological wrappings are fancy, the idolatrous desires producing these movements are the same ones that produced the golden calf at the foot of Mount Sinai (Exodus 32:24). Do not fall for the lie! Instead, be wise like Jesus and respond as He did in Matthew 4:10, “Go, Satan! For it is written, you shall worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only.”
