In Luke 1, Elizabeth and Mary were both surprised to be carrying children. Elizabeth was beyond typical childbearing years, and Mary had never been with a man (Luke 1:7, 34). Elizabeth and Mary spent three months together during their pregnancies, and it was a wonderful time for them both. They rejoiced in what the Lord was accomplishing through them and praised God for His excellent care. These two women exemplify submission to God. Every Christian can learn from their responses to such unusual circumstances.
Of special note is Mary, who praised God in an even more difficult predicament than Elizabeth’s. Elizabeth was beyond typical childbearing years, but at least she was married! Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but they would not come together until after the birth of Jesus (Matthew 1:24-25). During the three months she spent with Elizabeth, her mind must have been racing concerning what Joseph would think, yet no complaints against God are recorded from her mouth. Instead, Luke 1:46-55 records her praises to God.
After three months with Elizabeth, Mary returned to Joesph, who discovered she was pregnant. Joseph planned to put her away secretly, effectively ending her dreams of being a wife and mother with a peaceful family. An angel was sent to Joseph to stop him from this course of action, but Mary’s circumstances should be appreciated. One might say her submission to God had the potential to ruin her life. Yet she praised God and submitted obediently to His Word.
Every Christian should take note of her faithfulness and do likewise. When obedience to God seems like it will destroy everything you have worked so hard to attain, obey Him anyway and praise Him as you do. As Jesus taught, “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you” (Matthew 6:33). Trust God, and praise Him as you see His plan unfolding for your life.
