What did you think would be different? 2020 came and went. The calendar reads one number higher, but the issues that dominated 2020 still dominate 2021. If you sought to kick 2020 out the door and had hope that 2021 would be a new beginning, what, exactly, did you think would be different? If you are still the same person doing the same things in the same places with the same people in the same ways for the same reasons, expect nothing to change.
Everything that was 2020 has been and will be again. 2021 holds only more of the same. No hope comes from changing numbers on a page.
“All things are wearisome; man is not able to tell it. The eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor is the ear filled with hearing. That which has been is that which will be, and that which has been done is that which will be done. So there is nothing new under the sun. Is there anything of which one might say, “See this, it is new”? Already it has existed for ages which were before us. There is no remembrance of earlier things; and also of the later things which will occur, there will be for them no remembrance among those who will come later still.” (Ecclesiastes 1:8-11)
If you want 2021 to be anything other than more 2020, you need something beyond the sun on which to focus. You need to be saved by and live for Jesus. Those who live for Jesus gaze intently beyond this life to the resurrection where those counted righteous in Christ live together in a new, perfect creation with God forever (2 Peter 3:10-13). There is no hope in a year. Hope is only in Christ. Instead of starting a new year, start a new life by being born of water and the Spirit (John 3:5). Live for Jesus and look for the new heavens and new earth because this one will never change.
